Jay-Z really does like to mix things up….well he would, wouldn’t he, being a hip-hop artist!? He recently threw two fingers up to Oasis at Glastonbury by opening up with his own rendition of the Oasis hit Wonderwall after Oasis supposedly cricised the decision to make the hip-hop star the headline act at the festival. Then there was the Linkin Park/Jay Z “nu metal” combo that brought us the EP Collision Course. I have to admit I not only liked the Numb/Encore track but I bought the EP…yes BOUGHT it!
Now Jay-Z is set to partner with Brooklyn electro-pop duo, MGMT for his new album Blueprint 3 which is due out on September 11th. The album will feature a host of other cameos from the likes of Rihanna and Kanye West but I for one will be most interested to see how MGMT mesh with the rest.
MGMT’s Ben Goldwasser said they were “…pretty shocked” when contacted by Jay’s label to be involved in the album. MGMT apparently recieved a Kanye beat to add a little MGMT flavour to but according to Goldwasser: “We kind of went overboard with it”. “Originally, I think he just wanted us to write a hook for it, but we ended up making this weird vampire music. We thought it was cool, but we were worried that nobody else would think so.”
Apparently MGMT are the ‘go to guys’ of the moment in rap circles having also lent their vocals to fellow Brooklyner and new kid on the hip-hop block, Kid Cudi’s debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day also due out in September. Kid Cudi will also feature on Jay-Z’s new album.
