Fronted by Una Mullally, the new music show launches tonight on TG4 showcasing the best of homegrown talent and interviewing some of the big names on the alternative music scene

After a whopping 42 years showcasing the latest chart hits, Top of the Pops was relegated to gathering dust in the BBC archives back in 2006. Alternative music show, No Disco, popped it’s clogs in 2003 after a ten year run. Dave Fanning’s 2TV music programme lasted 6 years up until 2001. Since then music shows on this side of the pond have been few and far between. Well at last there’s a new music show in town – Ceol ar an Imeall (Music on the Edge) – hits TV screens tonight at 11.45pm on TG4. You can view a promo here.

Fronted by Sunday Tribune journalist Una Mullally (who also runs Thursday club night ‘Soundcheck’ at Spy), the programme will shine a light on up and coming Irish bands as well as interviewing well-known names like The XX and Passion Pit.

The Irish language programme is launching tonight with a bit of a bash and a special screening at Spy. It kicks off at 7pm and entry is free.

Will the World implode should the powers of Vanilla Ice and Jedward combine?!

Anyone reading this from outside Ireland/the UK will be uttering ‘Jedward who’ round about now. Here’s a bit of background on the phenomenon that is Jedward.

Jedward are twin teenage boys – John and Edward Grimes – from Lucan, Dublin who entered Simon Cowell’s ‘talent’ show last year

It quickly became obvious that despite their quirky ‘There’s Something About Mary’ haircuts and cheese-tastic matching outfits, the twins could not sing

They became the centre of attention, being booed at every live performance, with all talk focused on how they were lowering the tone of the competition

With the resilience of cockroaches and a truly unbelievable and inexplicable performance of Britney Spears ‘Oops I Did it Again’ complete with matching skin tight red catsuits, the pair began to win the public

Soon Jedward were the only reason to watch the show – will they finally get voted out? What song will they murder? What will they wear?

A ‘Jedward to Win’, “Jed we Can” campaign was launched to try and drive the twins to victory

The campaign failed but not before they gave their ‘best’ performance of the show by bending the rules during ‘Queen week’ when they sang and rapped (Irish rappers!!) a version of ‘Under Pressure’ mixed with Vanilla Ice’s ‘Ice Ice Baby’ - a song which samples the Queen song’s bassline.

It was reported today that Vanilla Ice saw the performance and is now keen to work with the Irish twins. They’ve also been rumoured to have been offered TV shows and modelling gigs so it looks like whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em, Jedward are here to stay (for a while at least!). Check out their attempt at ‘ Ice Ice Baby’ here complete with intro which gives a bit of a flavour of their ‘journey’ – performance starts at 2mins 32

There was no place for Lost, Dexter, Bad Girls, Deadwood or Spooks. So what made their list?

Since Ireland entered it’s much talked about ‘cold snap’, I’ve been spending my evenings snuggled up on the couch with everybody’s favourite mobster, Tony Soprano. The Guardian released their “Top 50 Television Dramas of All Time” today and with my seal of approval and a hoard of Emmy Awards, it’s no surprise that The Sopranos tops the list of the best dramas on the box.

It is surprising that the critically acclaimed show, The Wire, only squeezes in at number 14 with a number of 80’s BBC dramas – A Very Peculiar Practice, Talking Heads, The Singing Detective, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit and Boys From the Blackstuff – listed in the top ten.

Barely-a-drama, one of the longest running British TV dramas, Grange Hill, sneaks in at number 50, so one could presume that teen drama, My So Called Life, might have been 51. The Guardian critics were also swayed by the ‘primetime’ status of soaps, Coronation Street and Eastenders, giving them a place in the top 50 whilst omitting noughties hits Lost, Dexter, Deadwood and Spooks.

Also missing from the list is hard nosed prison drama, Bad Girls, which regularly pulled in over 7 million viewers in the UK across it’s eight seasons. The shows popularity has continued to rise since it went off air with growing demand for boxsets and a US remake through HBO on the way.

Channel 4 show, Queer as Folk, which follows the lives of three gay guys living in Manchester sits at number 13 on the list. Lesbian drama, the L Word is at number 36, ranking higher than 24 (now in it’s 8th season with talks of a 9th) at number 39 and cult classic, the X Files, at number 45. These are all dwarfed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer which is awarded 22nd place on the list – were the critics bitten by Sarah Michelle Gellar?

My top 5?

The Sopranos

The Wire

The L Word

Cracker

Twin Peaks

The Guardian list in full:

1. Sopranos

The ever-classy Singer Bernie Walsh, who showcases the wonders of Hiace-living, will be back this year when Lynch’s new show kicks off on January 12th at 10.50 on RTE2. So too is Xenophiliac Tallaght divorcee, Sheila Chic and her psychadelic bumbag, testing out her latest get rich/get married quick scheme.
The BBC have begun filming on a new lesbian TV show, the cast of which was announced this week

Life has been that bit duller since someone turned Jenny Shektor into a floater and the L Word came to be no more. Promises of a spin-off series called ‘The Farm‘ set in a prison and anchored by Leisha Hailey (those of you still tortured by the cliffhanger at the end of the L Word can rest a little easier as I presume that means that Alice was the one who bumped off Jenny) – came to nothing when the powers that be decided not to buy the series.

Never fear. The good old chaps at the BBC have stepped into the breach and have already begun filming a new lesbian drama series to air on BBC3 in Spring 2010. The six-part series with the provocative title ‘Lip Service’ will circle around the lives of three lesbians in Glasgow. The cast was announced this week and the girls will be played by Laura Fraser (Casanova and Nina’s Heavenly Delights), Ruta Gedmintas (The Tudors) and Fiona Button (The Palace).

Discussing the show, it’s writer and creator, Harriet Braun (who also wrote Mistresses), said:

“Based on my own experiences and those of my friends, I wanted to write a sexy, funny and irreverent drama that reflects what it is to be a young gay woman living in Britain today.”

“I loved The L Word but it’s high time we saw some contemporary British lesbians, with all the bad weather, trips to the pub and repressed emotions that go with that. It will be as funny as it is pathos-filled, because in my experience that’s how life is.”

So will simply be the L Word with some rain and Glaswegian accents thrown in? All signs point toward yes as we’ll be watching the life and times of:

Frankie – “an irreverent and provocative photographer who avoids commitment at all turns” (ok so replace a camera with scissors and it looks a bit more like Shane right?!?)
