No doubt aimed at the ‘more money than sense‘ and ‘clinically insane‘ market,  Regretsy is a haven for people who could not give up make and do after they reached adulthood. The site whose tagline is “Handmade? It looks like you made it with your feet” allows people to sell their handmade wares. A tasteless eBay if you will.

Having a quick look through the goods on offer caused me to completely forget the worries that those of us that reside in the real world must deal with. I pondered what the person who made this looked like and what their ‘day job’ was as they most definitely should not give it up to peddle their line of kitch soap:

Lindsay Lohan Paparazzi Slayer: Never a dull moment in the life of Lohan. When she and her assistant were picked up in Hollywood on Sunday morning her car was reportedly swarmed by paparazzi and when driving away it clipped one, hurting his wrist. Of course this is now being reported as Lindsay mowing down the pap action movie style.

Tila Tequila Pregnant….Surely God could not allow it: Gossip columnists must think they’ve died and gone to heaven since someone kicked over the rock that was hiding Tila Tequila. In her latest bout of crazy Tequila has hinted she may be pregnant. Doubtful a diluted tequila is on the way but it raises the question – is there anything she wouldn’t say/do?

Parents Charged for Tattoing their Children: A couple from Georgia have been charged with cruelty to children and reckless conduct for tattooing their kids, aged 10 to 17, using a needle made from guitar string. Parenting at its best. Apparently the kids wanted to be more like their parents and get cross designs on the hands or ‘Mom and Dad’ tattoos…aw…touching.

So it’s 2010 -  you should know that unless you just woke up from a coma, which, if you think about it,  would be a great way to begin a new year. You’d have missed the recession depression of 2009, the endless moaning, job cuts and be blissfully unaware of all the belt tightening required. You’d probably be a few pounds lighter as opposed to jiggling a newly formed chocolate belly, and be opening your eyes glad to be alive rather than depressed at the state of your post-Christmas bank balance and the long wait until the January paycheck cash injection!

Anyway, I started this site in October 2009 with great intentions and then was sucked into a number of crazy projects at work which led to long hours, mucho stresso and me being two coffees away from a permanent caffeine twitch. So November and December came and I was using my spare time to ensure I didn’t end up a single hermit in 2010 as opposed to blogging here!

Never fear, I’ll not bore you with talk of New Years Resolutions (however free to tell me yours…particularly if you’ve just woken up from the aforementioned coma as I’m sure they’ll be more interesting than most) and assure you that Yer Wan will be up and running and regularly updated from here on in.

Last year in the UK, video games topped the list of entertainment purchases with sales reaching £4bn. This was more than the total sales for DVD’s and CD’s combined and wiped the floor with Hollywood competition with more than four times cinema box office takings. Illustrating the demand for video games, Grand Theft Auto VI grossed $310m within 24 hours of its release last year whilst Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows earned only $220m in the same timeframe.

A  lesbian couple in Australia took their love of gaming from the living room to the altar with a gamers wedding. The couple played the game Rock Band rather than having a hen party, the wedding was themed around the video game Portal and they posed for their wedding pics with Nintendo DS consoles.

There used to be a perception that video gamers were nerdy spotty young guys in darkened room playing Super Mario Bros. until their fingers locked in position. The gaming industry has spent big bucks to change this perception. Advancements in computer graphics now means we see eye-popping TV adverts with heart pumping music and action which we’ve previously only seen for movie trailers. New consoles such as the Nintendo DS have provoked a change in thinking as to what computer gaming is. Gone are the days of people playing Pac Man. Your games console can now help improve your memory, your IQ and even help you make dinner. Celebrities of all ages have been recruited to showcase new consoles and games again trying to entice people to put down the TV remote and pick up a console. Gaming is now becoming cool….well cooler at least.Of course as the gaming industry becomes more powerful people and more people settle down to ‘’get their game on”, various group have questioned the cultural impact of gaming. Hilary Clinton, for example, is quoted as asking:

“What kind of values are we promoting when a child can walk into a store and find video games where you win based on how many people you can kill or how many places you can blow up?”

However a recent report from the Entertainment Software Association shows that in the USA shows that the average gamer is aged 35…not the vulnerable child likely to grab a grenade and a sawn off shotgun in order to imitate the action from Halo 3. The report also shows that 40% of gamers are female, with gaming companies moving away from the ’shoot em up’ style helping to attract more female gamers.

Video game consoles have developed to become home entertainment devices playing music and dvds and connecting to the internet. This has served to take the game out of one individuals bedroom, allowing the console to have pride of place underneath the TV, with families and friends (under the same roof or thanks to the internet, anywhere) competing against each other for the coveted accolade of ‘top scorer’. Video gaming is now a more interactive, social activity with people playing at local and national competitions, groups and chatting about their favourite games on online forums. There is even a site dedicated to lesbian gamers with the tagline “because sometimes we use our hands for other things”!

According to the inventors:

“LED Eyelash is a clever product that speaks to many Asian women’s desire for bigger eyes. It features an inclination sensor with mercury to turn on and/or off. The sensor can perceive the movements of the pupil in the eyes and eyelids. If someone wears it and moves her head, LED Eyelash will flicker following the movement.”

The guys behind this invention have posted an unnecessarily long video on YouTube which shows some Japanese girls wearing the eyelashes out and about in South Korea looking generally creepy and unnerving. They seem to be powered with a little pack which is held up by the wearer’s ears so they seem to be wearing headphones at all times…. with wires running from their eyes to their ears this is harldy cutting edge couture. The eyelashes are made even more ridiculous by the bizarre ‘chicken-head’ movements of the girl modelling them!

Can’t see these taking off although I’m sure opticians everywhere are hoping that they will.

To be honest I felt more uneasy than empowered -- The music made me feel as if I was watching a flashback sequence in the Bourne Identity and so I glued to this ad wondering if she was going to be blown out of her skimpies!

So is this empowering or offensive to women of the Muslim faith?
